The Howard Hughes Bus

The Lost Highway Museum (a private collection of autobilia and petrolinia located in Pomeroy, Washington) is the new location for the "Howard Hughes bus." This motor home/bus, built in 1940 by the legendary Howard Hughes, was purchased by the owner of the Lost Highway Museum and transported from the Bay Area to SE Washington State in May, 2000. According to officials of the planned museum for the Spruce Goose (McMinneville, Oregon), it is one of 8 that Hughes had constructed prior to World War II. In this page, we have attempted to show the unloading and final storage of the bus inside the museum.

	Doug Lueck of Doug's Towing, (Pomeroy, Washington) checks the alignment as the Howard Hughes bus is moved from the flatbed trailer to Doug's flatbed tow truck.


	This is it, says David, I'm ready to climb in.

	The owner carefully steers as the Howard Hughes bus is winched from the trailer to the tow truck.

	Success! The Howard Hughes bus has been moved to the tow truck for Stage Two of the operation.

	"Back it up carefully!" are the instructions given as the Howard Hughes bus is maneuvered over to the garage doors of the Lost Highway Museum.

	The Howard Hughes bus begins its slow descent to the road after a long trip from the San Francisco Bay Area to Pomeroy, Washington.

	The onlookers are trying to decide if the Howard Hughes bus will actually fit into the Museum.

	The new owner of the Howard Hughes bus is checking out the alignment of the tow truck as the bus is slowly backed down to the pavement.

	"Yes, it'll fit! I'm sure it'll fit! Hey, anyone got a measuring tape?"

	The Howard Hughes bus looks a bit worse for wear after being stored outside under a tarp for many years. But the inside is in great shape.

	We have lift-off!

	"Houston, Eagle has landed."

	The old and the "new." As the Howard Hughes bus is backed into the Lost Highway Museum, it temporarily sits next to a 1960's era "Little Loafer" travel trailer.

	"OK, crank the wheels a bit that way," helps Doug Lueck."

	The Finish! The Howard Hughes bus is safely parked in its storage place at the Lost Highway Museum. According to the owner of the Museum, the Howard Hughes bus may once again possibly spend some time on the open roads.


	The Hughes Bus was sold during June 2003 and is leaving Pomeroy.
