Incubator Fund Now Completed

Clipping of story from East Washingtonian

The baby incubator fund is now complete and as soon as a salesman calls the new machine will be ordered.

Mr. and Mrs. Bob Still contributed $5.00 to the fund this month making it stand at $218.

Then one day Walter Roibinson happened by the hospital and asked how much more was needed. When told $100, he wrote out a check for that amopunt and the incubator was realized.

Since the Garfield County Memorial hospital was opened, Mr and Mrs. Robinson have donated money to buy many needed articles.

From Page one of the EW on March 27, 1958:

County Dads Equip Hospital Laundry

Entirely on their own accord the past and present county commissioners of this county have done a fine thing for the benefit of this community by purchasing a large commercial type washing machine and extractor for the laundry room of the Garfield County Memorial hospital.

The machines are being installed this week and will be ready for use by April 1, [1958,] Mrs. Cleora Van Ausdle, hospital supervisor, said today.

The three hospital board members, Mrs. Lester Van Dyke, J. T. Ledgerwood, Bert Richardson and the supervisor, Mrs. Van Ausdle, all gave high praise and thanks for what the men have done.

Previously the laundry was equipped with two home-type washers which were inadequate for the large daily load of washing that is required by a hospital. Sheets and other hospital laundry will now be washed with ease in the big machine and from there will go directly to the extractor and then to the dryer if need be.

Former County Commissioner Oscar Victor had a lot to do with the initiation of the project, but wants no special thanks for his part in the matter. Below is a letter from Victor to the hospital board that explains the project and gives the names of those responsible.

Board of Supervisors of Memorial Hospital:

Dear Board Members:

In line with our talks of the past few weeks I am enclosing checks in the amount of $3610.00 to be used for the purpose of buying laundry equipment.

These contributions were made under the caption: We, the undersigned residents of Garfield County who have had the privilege of serving on the Commissioners' court, this county, in order to show our interest in, and appreciation of the splendid work being done at the hospital desire to donate the amount opposite our names. The money to be used to purchase suitable laundry equipment for the hospital.

Here is the list of names, in about the order of their respective service to the county.

W. J. Schneckloth, H. B. Stallcop, C. H. Rommel by Fred and Anna Rommel, Alva Ruark, E. H. Kimble by Etta Kimble, Wm. Roller, Oscar Victor, Harry Bartels, W. A. Towner, C. C. Wolf, John Dye, John McGreevy, Jason Killingsworth, Harvey Light, Wayne Beale and Floyd Ruark.

You will notice the names of Fred and Anna Rommel, who gave in memory of their husband and father, the late Chris Rommel; also the name of Etta Kimble who gave in memory of her husband, the late Ernie Kimble. This is, I think, a mighty nice gesture by these good folks, and a fitting tribute to the memory of these men who served the county well for many years.

Now, while this thing may have been primarily my brain child the ease with which the idea of "an investment in good health" was sold to the other members of the group would have made a Fuller brush salesman turn green with envy. The response has been so spontaneous I am asking that no special mention be made of me in connection with the project. With such whole-hearted co-operation it is only fair to consider all equally guilty.

Joan Kay Herres, Pickers are cited

Joan Kay Herres and the Pomeroy Pickers were cited for their continuing service to the residents of Memory Manor at a recent Hospital auxiliary meeting. Both Joan and the Pickers have faithfully and willingly given of their time to provide enjoyment for the residents of Memory Manor.

Joan has been involved with the weekly craft sessions for more than two years. With the help of equally loyal volunteers, she has provided the many activities and useful craft ideas for the residents. These many and varied items have been seen by fair-goers the past two years and were offered at the flea market during the past Christmas season. Proceeds from the sale of these items purchase more materials.

The Pomeroy Pickers have rarely missed a Wednesday evening since Memory Manor first opened its doors. These men play favorite songs for the residents and entice group participation with sing-a-longs. They have invited various Memory Manor residents to join them in entertaining and have many local citizens play with them from time to time.

Good news about Memory Manor found in the May 29, 1980, EW:

Memory Manor yard improved

The courtyard at Memory Manor received some new flowers and other improvements last week, after volcanic dust was washed off.

According to Hospital Administrator Chuck Norman, several members of the Spade Swingers Garden Club planted petunias donated by Jim Manring. Those doing the planting were Marie Williams, Bobbie Brown and Virginia Zorza.

Earlier, Hill Hanson and Gene Trescott cleaned up the ash, spaded the ground and turned on the water in the fountain.

Besides the new petunias, the perennial azaleas and rhododendrons are also in bloom.

Wash Time

Kenny Riggs of Larson Painting Co. washes off the exterior walls of Memory Manor, to prepare it for a protective coating his firm is applying. Because the original stucco finish developed hundreds of cracks, the hospital commissioners decided to reseal the walls with a plastic coating.
