This is a "Territorial Cover," as Washington State was admitted into the Union on November 11, 1889.

The Academy of the Sacred Heart was a Catholic School with teachers from the Dominican Order. During the 1900's, the parish (Holy Rosary) opened it's own school, which was staffed by Sisters of the Holy Names.

Joseph Pomeroy, founder (with Martha Pomeroy) of the town died during July 1889.

 


The envelope above was mailed from Pomeroy on April 22, 1895 to Walla Walla, Washington.  The receiving stamp (right) shows that the letter was received in Walla Walla by 6:30 p.m. the same day. Current mileage from Pomeroy to Walla Walla along U.S. Highway 12 is 67 miles.
